Understanding the Need

What happens when foster youth turn 18?

For many young adults, turning 18 means greater independence. For young people leaving foster care, it can also mean losing the housing, structure, and support system they have relied on.

Mickey's House Foundation refers to young adults who age out of foster care as “Timed-Out Foster Youth” — young adults who have reached adulthood and aged out of the foster care system.

Aging Out of Care

Adulthood can arrive all at once.

Young adults leaving foster care are expected to navigate the same transition into adulthood as everyone else, but many do so without a permanent family, reliable housing, or someone they can call when things go wrong. Every experience is different — yet many face these responsibilities at the same time.

The transition can create serious barriers.

Housing Instability

Without a stable place to live, young adults may face homelessness, frequent moves, couch surfing, or unsafe living situations.

Employment & Financial Stability

Entering the workforce while managing housing, transportation, and other basic needs can make long-term stability difficult.

Education

Unstable housing and financial pressure can make completing high school, college, or career training more challenging.

Mental Health & Well-Being

Transitions, past trauma, and the pressure of sudden independence can create significant emotional and mental-health challenges.

The Bigger Picture

Why this transition deserves attention.

We are gathering current, sourced data on young adults aging out of foster care. Figures will appear here with their citations once verified.

Why Housing Matters

Stability creates room to move forward.

Reliable housing can make it easier to focus on school, work, transportation, finances, health, relationships, and long-term goals.

A home does not solve every challenge, but it can provide the foundation needed to start addressing the rest. That is why Mickey's House focuses first on creating safe, attractive places where young adults can live with dignity and greater stability.

Support matters, too.

Young adults leaving foster care may carry significant stress from past experiences and major life changes. Many benefit from counseling, trusted relationships, mentoring, and other support systems.

Stable housing is one piece of the transition. Trusted relationships, mental-health resources, mentoring, and practical support can also play an important role in helping young adults build stability.
